Description
These Mesquite Cauliflower Steaks are a flavorful, easy-to-make dish that’s perfect for grilling or roasting. With a smoky BBQ rub and a tangy BBQ sauce glaze, these steaks are deliciously tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. It’s the ultimate plant-based BBQ dish that will satisfy everyone!
Ingredients
- 1 large head of cauliflower
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp ground cumin
- 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
- 1/2 tsp salt
Optional Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup BBQ sauce (choose your favorite kind)
- 1/2 tsp chili powder (optional for extra heat)
- Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven or Grill For Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
For Grill: Preheat your grill to medium-high heat (about 400°F).
2. Prepare the Cauliflower: Remove the leaves and stem from the cauliflower head, keeping the core intact. Place the cauliflower stem-side down and cut it into 1-inch thick “steaks.” You should get about 2-3 steaks from the center, with smaller florets on the outside.
3. Season the Cauliflower: In a small bowl, mix together the olive oil, garlic powder, smoked paprika, onion powder, cumin, black pepper, salt, and chili powder (if using).
Brush both sides of the cauliflower steaks with the seasoning mixture, ensuring each steak is well-coated.
4. Cook the Cauliflower. For Oven: Place the seasoned cauliflower steaks on the prepared baking sheet. Roast for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through, until the cauliflower is golden brown and tender.
For Grill: Place the seasoned cauliflower steaks directly on the grill. Grill for about 6-7 minutes per side, flipping carefully, until they are tender and slightly charred.
5. Glaze with BBQ Sauce: In the last 5 minutes of cooking, brush the cauliflower steaks with BBQ sauce. Flip and coat the other side with sauce as well. Let the sauce caramelize on the steaks.
6. Serve: Once the cauliflower steaks are tender and the BBQ sauce has thickened, remove them from the oven or grill. Garnish with freshly chopped parsley (optional)
Notes
- Customize Your BBQ Sauce: Choose a smoky, spicy BBQ sauce for extra flavor, or opt for a tangy, sweet sauce if you prefer a milder taste.
- Grill Option: For an even smokier flavor, use a smoker or add wood chips to your grill.
- Add Toppings: Top with vegan sour cream, shredded cheese, or avocado for extra creaminess and flavor.
Did you know: Cauliflower is high in choline, an essential nutrient many Americans lack? Choline supports metabolism, aids in DNA synthesis, and the integrity of cell membranes!
If you’re trying to find lower-grain alternatives, cauliflower is a versatile substitute (rice, pizza crust, mash)
