Giving Gratitude and Thanks
David tells his daughter to value and appreciate what you have. He wants to walk the walk, not just talk the talk. That means acknowledging how the little things can make big impact. What little things? How about…having the fingers to write this episode…having the ability to talk to people in a shared language…being able to cuddle with his wife.
No one on their death bed says, I wish I had more time for those emails. Verbalize or write these little “gratitudes.” It may sound silly, but there are scientific, evidence-based, neurological reasons to do so!
And this can apply to food. No matter what you are eating. Yes, even “junk” food or fast food. Not everyone has the ability to eat. Not everyone has access to drinkable water. If you are enjoying life, know that this can positively impact health!
Story about Gratitude and the Little Things
David shares that he has been dealing with anger issues and taking on too many responsibilities. He has big goals, but how to get there? Therapy has been helpful and also recognizing that working on little things add up to big wins. Like our podcast name suggests, one small bite.
By focusing on the little things and holding onto gratitude, big changes can happen. For David and his family, it means having family meals as often as possible. Your small thing to commit to does not have to be the same as David’s. After all, situations can vary from person to person. He encourages you to take some time to think about what your small thing to commit to could be. Consider this quote from Denzel Washington, “Without commitment, you’ll never start, but more importantly, without consistency, you’ll never finish.”
Find that small, simple thing that brings you joy as well. Enjoyment, not punishment, is more productive.
Show Gratitude through journaling or saying it out loud. If you eat with other people, try sharing one thing you are grateful for while sharing the meal.
