Welcome to One Small Bite – which is an approach to life that is way easy to chew and swallow. This approach is like a recipe for feeling good, or alimentar! Like recipes, there are ingredients.

[01:35] Developing the Anti-Diet Recipe

David did not start out with anti-diet work. However, the anti-diet One Small Bite approach started developing (unknowingly) a while back. David’s father wrote a book about 25 years go titled, The Oracle of the 3 Tortoises. It is similar to the turtle and the hare fable. That fable really made an impact for what would become David’s One Small Bite approach. What sticks out about this fable is that the turtle won the race.

The One Small Bite approach is about criticizing the hare’s method for winning and trying the turtle’s method for winning. In this metaphor, the hare is diet culture and the turtle is One Small Bite. Diet culture wants you to get to your goals quickly, which often lead to burn out. Sure, the turtle was running fast, but he felt the need to nap! That’s the burn out. The turtle is slow and steady and because of these traits, the turtle wins!

[03:00] One Small Bite is Starting an Anti-Diet Life

When the book, One Small Bite, was developing as an idea, David got great advice which said, “write a book that serves your audience.” Which is why the book is not about David and how he stays healthy. There are too many books like that out there anyway. This is the “do like me and be like me” fallacy. This book is about how David’s clients became their own heroes, and taught David what it meant to really transform their lives. David started noticing patterns in his clients who were successful. These patterns are identifiable traits that are the ingredients for the One Small Bite recipe that leads to a rewarding anti-diet life.

[07:30] The Ingredients Developed for Anti-Diet Work

Then, the year 2020, shook up the world. It was a forced slow down. One of David’s clients who had been working with him a while, came back in with a desire to lose weight again. This was around the time David was tempted to provide a weight centric approach. And yet, instead, they explored those feelings around weight. This curiosity led to a positive outcome.

David learned from his client, who committed to one small change, despite the client’s inner critic, and approached himself with compassion. Things turned around for the better.

For example, David and the client had to figure out why the client was over snacking at night. There were experiments, followed by discovered history and emotions behind this snacking. What is interesting is through this small change, the weight was no longer the focus. By focusing on this one thing, the client became like the turtle in the fable. If weight loss was the focus, then the client’s relationship to food would suffer. If weight loss was the focus, that would have not stopped the night snacking because dieting leads to more binge episodes. This client’s story helped develop the One Small Bite approach.

[16:45] 4 Ways to Start an Anti-Diet Life

Unlike dieting, the One Small Bite approach will help you secure your relationship to food. This is more helpful for sustainable habit changes and life transformation. Through paying attention to his clients, David noticed that there are 4 pillars of transformation. These 4 pillars are the ingredients to this One Small Bite recipe and the 4 ways to start an anti-diet life:

  1. Curiosity
  2. Compassion
  3. Commitment
  4. Consistency.

These ingredients are presented through client’s narratives who took that approach in the book. For example, you’ll read about how the repetition of one new habit had a domino effect in life. That’s consistency. How curiosity leads to experimentation and learning about yourself. Whether its success or failures, it’s all a learning process. You will read about a perfectionist, who wanted to look a certain way to get his way in life. Through compassion, his life improved.

[21:48] Saying No to Diet Culture

Dieting. Food Rules. Physical activity in extremes. UGH. How exhausting! These things lead to ignoring your body and damage your relationship to food. The One Small Bite is anti-diet work. We get away from that emotional drainage of dieting and exercising for weight loss. The One Small Bite provides transformation and secures a positive relationship to food through curiosity, compassion, commitment, and consistency. And that, leads to feeling good.
