Episode Description:

Imagine a person who helps everyone but the self. The person does not have energy to cook or stick to an exercise routine. Despite the lack of energy, sleeping is not easy. The day was prioritized by work or family. Eating is squeezed into a busy schedule, shoving down food in-between appointments, events, plans, and other’s needs. Escapism into Netflix or Tic Tok is labeled as self-care.

Many of David’s clients fits this description and this is the story of supporting her to be her own hero.

The client came in with complaints of weight gain. Diet culture told her to do this and that, stick to these rules and you’ll get what you want. Except, the diet was not helpful.

Was it really weight loss that is needed?  No, she wanted to enjoy food and the music at Zumba class. David picked up on one small habit, her morning coffee was “me time.” In a crazy schedule, autopilot syndrome happens. Her body was running on fumes and this creates a starved brain. She had human giver syndrome, meaning that person cannot receive and burnout sets in.

David taught his client to use that time to create interoceptive awareness, which builds self-reflection skills. Her reliance on diets stopped because she learned how to listen to her own body’s needs.

David explains, caffeine stimulates the pituitary gland to release adrenaline hormones, or stress hormones. The peak after the first hour creates a tolerance to caffeine over time. Drinking more caffeine is increasing those stress hormones and feeding the burnout. Stress releases epinephrine, norepinephrine, cortisol, and stored glucose and fat. Insulin is released to uptake the glucose to use it as fuel. Stress is a perceived threat in the body. The burnout begs for more fuel through snacking and eating easy foods like takeout. We internalize this stress, the body tries to communicate, but without Interoceptive awareness, the body does not get what it needs.

One of the most common questions is, how do I get my energy up? David asks listeners to ask yourself, what is one small thing I can change to create a domino effect?
