Episode Description:

7 Warning Signs Diets Don’t Work

  1. Unsustainable.

Diets are about rules of when and what. So many of them avoid entire food groups. Diets come in two to five phases or levels. Usually, a starvation phase and then a “power up” phase. Some will ask you for a genetic test for assessment and provide a glossary report with a long list of avoidance foods. For example, nightshade vegetables are often flagged. But you know what? Not many people are eating eggplant. Come on – diets are bogus.  Some will give you a traffic light system with red, yellow, and green foods. All of this creates a sense of overwhelming confusion. Other diets are about time restricted eating.

The body actually dictates what and when to eat. We try to modify or control this and then, we work against our own bodies. It’s not you. It’s the diet.

  1. Not Evidenced-Based

Most diets were created from people without nutrition training, who market what worked for them. Even some doctors use their education to do this! There’s a mentality: “if it works for me, then it will work for everyone” – false! Even diets with research create a marginalizing effect towards people who don’t eat that way. European foods are not on everyone’s plate. Westernizing diets have not helped.

  1. Unrealistic weight loss promises

Unsustainable weight loss through starvation is a recipe to backfire. If it’s too good to be true…then, it probably isn’t true. There’s only a handful of people who have the time and resources to make that Hollywood body and it never lasts forever.

  1. Extremes of exercising

Diets claim exercise not important or advocate the opposite with extreme exercises. No joyful movement allowed, or it doesn’t count. High-intensity workouts, over the long-term, is not helpful for persistent weight loss. Most research shows that exercise only helps 20 to 30% in the initial weight loss. And that’s typically mostly water from the breakdown of muscle. Physical activity is actually a necessity in life for all of us, but it’s not helpful in losing weight to maintain our health. Exercise is beneficial for non-scale health reasons. High intensity workouts can lead to injuries and that creates complicated health problems in a person’s life.

  1. Supplements.

UGH. So many of these metabolism supplements lead to avoidance of eating, increased heart rate, sleeping problems, crashing and withdrawals.

  1. Endorsements

Diets endorsed by celebrities, an influencer, or even a doctor, are just an emotional hook with testimonials. Social proof. “It’s working for me so it will work for you” mentality again. Social proof can be important and following it to the end of the story is also important. What happens to the person over the years? Hmmm…what happens years down the road?

  1. Increased desires.

Elimination creates absence cravings. What we put our attention to, grows. It becomes part of our lives. It may not be obvious based on the elimination and what you are craving. Dietitian nutritionists can help you piece together the patterns of food choices. The body knows what its missing. This is stressful for the body and will communicate through appetite changes and emotions.

SO – what do we do???

Pause, slow down, pay attention. What are you eating a lot of? What are you not eating a lot of?  Focus on what brings you joy. Focus on a small change.

Closing Announcement:
