[03:29] Guest Reid Garcia Kickstarts Cooking Skills

Reid Garcia founded a company called Helpful for Life after quitting his electrical engineering job. It’s a little bit of a jump. What does it have to do with engineering? How’d you get there? Reid found himself trying to figure out these things about life, like credit cards, taxes, cooking, finding an apartment, moving across the country, finding a job, etc. And not just how to, but the best way and avoiding big life traps.  The tagline is – it’s the best education you never got.

Reid’s engineering background comes into handy because it dealt with complex systems, figuring out how they work, and asking why. He looked at the people aspect of things- why do we do it that way? So that’s exactly what produced his service, Kickstart Your Kitchen. His mother and his childhood really inspired him as well. Want to support Orozco Nutrition while also supporting Helpful For Life? [09:21] Why Kickstart Cooking Skills?

Cooking and eating are something that everybody needs to do. So, it doesn’t matter who you are, where you’re from, guy, girl, non-binary, it doesn’t matter. You need to eat to live.

There are four major milestones within Kickstart Your Kitchen, because cooking is about a lot more than just cooking itself. One, planning. Two, prep. Three, cook your food. Four, clean up and storage. Before you even start cooking, there’s some things you need to do to get ready.

Reid program shares how you can navigate grocery stores to find the things that you want without it taking too much time or without you spending too much money.

One of the big differences about Kickstart Your Kitchen compared to other programs is that it looks at the big picture and is not just teaching you a recipe. Not, “here’s this chicken dinner that you can make.” It goes through what you need to know about chicken. Here’s some of the nutritional information about it, how you might want to use it, what it looks like as it’s cooking at different temperatures, etc. You buy the program once and you have it for life. It’s a material that you can keep referencing time and time again.

You will save at least $10 a month. Because once you learn how to cook, you’re going to be able to save so much money on your groceries. You’re going to be able to eat out less. You’re going to be able to reuse your leftovers that are appealing. If you think leftovers are gross, that’s cause you’re doing leftovers wrong, which is something else that the course covers.

[17:59] Success in Cooking Skills

Something wonderful about cooking is being able to go into the kitchen, look in the pantry, look in the fridge, and see what you have, and always be able to make a meal and for it to be somewhat healthy. No recipe does not mean no dinner.

One client’s story was after multiple knee surgeries. His lifestyle went from basketball to sedentary. He started learning these kitchen techniques, which lead to less sitting and now is has slowly become more active. His psychological shifted too for the better too.

If you look at Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, things for survival include food. And if you’re not in a good state with food, and you’re not eating well and feeling well, it’s harder to do those things that go further up the pyramid.

Another success is improving the dining experience because it’s not just about what you eat. It’s also about how you eat it. And whether it’s for your wife, whether it’s for a significant other, maybe it’s for a new prospect, that date, or maybe it’s just for yourself or for friends and family, whoever it’s for. By cooking and plating it in a certain way and setting the ambience. You’ll find that people will enjoy the experience and change their relationship with food a little bit.

[29:00] Challenges Met

The program is always improving. One thing the program cannot do for people is take the first step and starting to do it. Reid advises to separate the “do” from “the think.”

Building sustainable habits to continuing to do it can be challenging as well. This inspired his team to create a cohort-based model to learn from others’ mistakes and successes.

[33:08] Commitment and Consistency

Mistakes are learning opportunities, not a stopping point. Everyone makes mistakes.

[41:19] Knife Skills

For the beginner, just find one good chef knife to get comfortable with. Then, stabilize your cutting board by making it flat and using a damp towel to stop it from moving.

For the advanced, get into sharpening and honing. That edge needs to be narrow and sharp. Washing the knife by hand will keep your knife sharper, longer.

[49:35] One Small Bite to Kickstart Your Cooking Skills

Pick one thing to try. An egg is a good one because it’s cheap and versatile.
